Michigan

The Wolverine State is touched on by four of the five Great Lakes. (Lake Ontario is the odd lake out.) Not surprisingly then, Michigan is also called the Great Lakes State. Michigan is made up of two separate peninsulas, with the larger (and much more populous) lower portion being shaped somewhat like a mitten, and the Upper Peninsula horning its way out from the top of Wisconsin into Lakes Michigan and Superior. Two industries are practically synonymous with Michigan: the automobile (centered around Detroit) and breakfast cereal (centered around Battle Creek). Michigan is also a major cherry-producing state, producing about 75 percent of the tart cherries grown in the United States. These are the sour cherries that are best suited for pies, jellies, jams, and juices. Early French explorers from Normandy (still a center of cherry production in its own right) planted the first cherry trees in the Midwest on their way to founding cities like Detroit. The trees thrived along Lake Michigan, setting the stage for a serious industry to blossom. Michigan is also morel country. Meaty morels grow wild in the Michigan woods, clinging to the roots of elm and oak trees.

About me:
As the youngest of 3 daughters growing up in a very traditional Italian/Irish household, I grew accustom with lavish meals. Unfortunately I have never been a good cook. So bad, in fact, that the only duty my mother would trust me with was browning the meat. I am proud to report that I have made a complete 180 since my upbringing. My passion for cooking (and buying kitchen necessities) started when I moved in with my boyfriend. All of a sudden mac and cheese and ramen noodles for 1 doesn't really cut it anymore. Thank goodness I found this website! Despite my boyfriend's picky yet simple taste of food, I continue to venture out my comfort zone with new found recipes. I am so very determined to be a good cook and impress the socks off of my parents, siblings, friends and my boyfriend.

Watermelon Fire and Ice Salsa

Reviewed on Jul. 5, 2008 by tizzylizz
Something different and really tasty! Everyone loved at the July 4th party I took this to. The only change I made was that instead of garlic salt, I used part garlic powder and kosher salt and I also drained the diced watermelon for a few hours to help with the water content of the salsa.

Easy Ham and Cheese Appetizer Sandwiches

Reviewed on Jul. 5, 2008 by tizzylizz
Made these for a 4th of July party, and everyone loved them. The only changes I made was that I only made half the sauce recipe to spread on the 12 small buns. I wrapped all 12 buns in foil and baked in oven about 20min. or until cheese melted. Very good!
